The director of "The Matrix" and the highly-anticipated film "Cloud Atlas," which stars Tom Hanks and Hale Berry, has become the first major Hollywood director to publicly come out as transgender.
Larry Wachowski is now called Lana Wachowski after undergoing a sex-change operation. Wachowski, who reportedly completed sexual reassignment surgery in 2008, has revealed her transition while promoting her new film, Cloud Atlas.
In her first public appearance since transitioning as Lana during a Los Angeles promo last week of her new film, Wachowski showed up in a gray dress with her hair styled in fuchsia dreadlocks, announcing in a German accent: “Hi, I’m Lana.”
Wachowski has been transitioning from a man to a woman for several years now after his divorce in 2002. The 47-year-old director is listed on some legal documents as Laurenca Wachowski.
