Ryan Lochte wins United States' first gold in London Olympics; Michael Phelps fails to medal


Michael Phelps, the 14-time gold medalist, failed to win a medal in the 400 individual medley on Saturday, July 28, as rival Ryan Lochte steamrolled the rest of the field to win the gold medal.




Michael Phelps got off to a disastrous start at the London Olympics when he failed to get a medal in the 400 IM Final on Saturday, July 28. He placed fourth, swimming from the outside eighth lane, after barely qualifying for the final in the morning heats. Ryan Lochte, on the other hand, took home the first U.S. gold medal.

Brazil’s Thiago Pereira took the silver, while Japan’s Kosuke Hagino got the bronze.
